Our Goals

Our department aims to nurture active learners and proficient users of their Mother Tongue Languages (MTL), who acquire communication skills to connect with others, and also to deepen their understanding of their culture. We hope students will find joy in learning their MTL and appreciate it as a living part of their identity and heritage.  

We focus on the following: 

1. Communication 

• Develop confident communicators in Mother Tongue, equipped with 21st Century Competencies for life and work. 

2. Culture 

• Cultivate a deep appreciation for one’s cultural heritage as part of Singapore’s multi-racial society.  

• Spark curiosity to explore the links between language and culture. 

3. Connect 

• Strengthen meaningful connections to heritage and community.

• Provide platforms for authentic use of MTL through real-life experiences. 

Our Approach

1. Our Mother Tongue Department is committed to a learner-centered approach to nurture confident and culturally rooted learners.  

2. We embrace differentiated instruction (DI) to cater to the diverse needs and learning paces of our students, ensuring that each child can progress meaningfully in their language journey. 

3. Harnessing ICT, we create engaging and interactive learning experiences that promote customized, self-directed, and collaborative learning. Through the use of digital tools and platforms, students are empowered to take ownership of their language development in ways that suit their individual styles. 

4. To deepen critical thinking and reflection, we integrate thinking routines into our lessons. These routines encourage students to connect ideas, explore perspectives, and build a stronger understanding of language and culture. 

Together, these approaches foster a vibrant learning environment where students develop proficiency and a lifelong love for their Mother Tongue.
